For those of you that didn't know I considered myself a Republican for the last few years despite major differences that I convinced myself Republicans would eventually come around on. When Joe Repya announced he would run Independence Party I was excited and ready to support him every step of the way in an uphill battle to defeat Tom Horner. Soon after he announced he presented his goofy but sensible thoughts on a Viking football stadium. Unfortantly when the media came calling his proposal remained goofy despite a full oppurtunity to answer questions that had to be asked. After one such interview a state rep called in to explain why he didn't support Repya's run for Republican Party chair with the simple explanation Joe never asked. I had thought everything Republicans were saying were sour grapes and an effort to make sure a more left leaning candidate Represents the IP.

Joe's web site was great he had a representitive and lit at my caucus, and I understand how hard it is to get exposure at this stage even if your a Republican or DFL front runner. I had no doubt he was running as hard of a campaign as he knew how, still when it was announced that Joe quite his campaign it was clear the reason was because he thought he was playing run for governor fantasy camp and wasn't ready for the real work. Candidates come and so much goes into a good campaign that you should never expect anything more then what Reypa's campaign ended being, but Joe's problem was he had to find someone to blaim when in reality nobody would have blaimed him for ending his effort knowing Tom Horner was the favorite among IP supporters, but just as he did a few months earlier when he left the Republican party he had to take cheap shots at good people on the way out.

I could go on and on about him but unlike Joe I'm more mature then that.

2010 Governor's race

With Tim Pawlenty out everyone who has ever thought of running for Governor will. What does that mean for the Independence party? A better chance at a high level candidate. Unfortanatly unless someone like Kent Hrbek or Prince wanted to run the Independence Party is really limited to Jesse Ventura, Dean Barkley, Tim Penny, and Tammy Lee if they want anyone who is shooting for anything more then retaining major party status.

Among those Dean Barkley would probably give you the best result, however if you think winning (or competing at a level that makes watching election results meaningful) and losing are the only two results that matter Tammy Lee is the candidate with the best shot.

Barkley will always exceed expectations as he did in the unresolved US Senate race of 2008, but it's just not reasonable to think he will ever exceed 20%, Tammy Lee might not exceed 10% statewide, but if poll #'s show any momentum behind her she has the qualities and the political skill to take advantage. Jesse Ventura won't run. Tim Penny would have solid results, possibly even similar to Barkley, but he lacks political skill.

Others who would consider a run include Jim Gibson and Peter Hutchinson, as well as anyone Tim Penny hand picks as for whatever reason the party cares about Penny's complete lack of political insight

For me unless it's Tammy Lee I really don't care.

Maureen Reed

Peter Hutchinson's 2006 running mate Maureen Reed is challenging Michele Bachmann looking for the endorsement of both the DFL and Independence Party as Elwin Tinklenberg recieved in 2008.

Bachmann clearly has a large target considering how outspoken and often silly she sounds and how competitive her first two races were. If the goal is to defeat Bachmann then the DFL must understand that she can only have one opponent. There is no question if she runs on the DFL line that someone will take the Independence Party line and take 5-10% of the anti Bachmann vote. The only hope is that she is on the Independence line with a clear DFL line. I can't see it happening, and I'm sure Reed understands this. I'm also sure the DFL is unwilling to sacrifice to defeat Bachmann just as the Republicans have been unwilling to sacrifice to defeat Keith Ellison. They may embrace Reed over all other DFL candidates, but they will be unwilling to put her and the Independence Party in position to win.

In the end this looks like a Bachmann victory 48% to 45% with an IP ballot line candidate making up more then the difference. I used to close a blog like this saying this is a case for instant run off voting, but Democrats have decided they don't want it, and thus Republicans can take advantage.

Jesse Ventura said we should have a none of the above option on the ballot in the US Senate race, and 6 months later we have exactly that. While the closeness of the race and not the quality of the candidates is the reason for the delay justice is being served to both Norm Coleman and Al Franken. Both could not reach 42% of the vote. To put that in perspective think about the best of 7 playoff series going on in the NHL and NBA right now. 3 out of 7 is 42.85% and represents the end of a season. In a few months a winner will be sent to Washington, with no clear answer as to why one candidate gained hundereds of votes over the course of the recount. Whoever it is will serve a for 5 years and lose a re-election bid should they be so arrogent as to run again, and while it can be said Minnesota is shorthanded in the US Senate that speaks more to the lack of integroty shown by the other 98 Senators and/or the lack of ability of our sitting US Senator.

As for the none of the above option nobody in power is going to allow it, however their may be a legal way to create the option. If you recall in 2006 Robert Fitzgerald ran for US Senate despite the fact he was 29 on election day. He was considered an elegible candidate because he turned 30 by the time he would have been seated in January. I am among the thousands of Minnesotans that was 29 when US Senators should have been seated but have turned 30 since. As far as I'm concearned this sets precedent in the future for all those that potentially fit this catagory to run for office, and should they win they could start their term the day they hit 30.

In 2012 a 24 year old should run for US Senate, then maybe we will stop seeing candidates that can't win game Seven.

When I'm endorsing Michele Bachmann, but in light of Barack Obama (who the media has not been willing to investigate) set to become the most fiscally liberal president of my lifetime, we have to be willing to set asside major objectives such as leagalizing gay marraige to keep the true fiscal conservitives we have.

While many will talk about compramise I look for a firmly planted principal. Michele Bachmann is the most principaled member of congress Minnesota has, even if she is as wrong as you can get in regard on gay marraige, at least she's honest about it unlike the Democrats who all claim to be "friends of the gay community" but take no meaningful action.

There are 11 days left of the country I know and love, and all be damned if we get rid of one more fiscal conservitive simply because she was being honest about what Barack Obama represents.

Independence Party presidential endorsement

Next weekend the Independence Party will hold a convention to endorse a candidate for President among all candidates. Media articles focus in on Obama and McCain, but the reality is neither of those candidates are eligible based on platform rules, so basically it will come down to Ralf Nader, Chuck Baldwin, or Bob Barr. If the party is moving in the direction it needs to a Bob Barr endorsement will occur, if Tim Penny, Peter Hutchinson and there supporters are allowed to continue to strangle the party they will say platform me damned and endorse Obama effectively ending Dean Barkley's hope's to defeat Norm Coleman and Al Franken.

A poll about a month back reported Dean Barkley at 3%, but reading the details of that poll 3% of respondents answered the question who are you voting Norm Coleman or Al Franken with Dean Barkley. A poll that actually would have named Barkley would show his support in the mid teens.

Here and there you will see a poll reporting results for Bob Barr around 2 or 3%, but the reality is nobody is willing to acknowledge that Bob Barr is a candidate for President of the United States.

With both McCain and Obama both voting in favor of the bailout millions of Americans want something better to support.

The polls are going to be off this year with the three way senate race, the crazy assumption that young people will vote in record #'s, and the sad reality that racism still exists. Bob Barr will likely crack 10% in a few states despite the fact nobody in the media would dare predict it. With Dean Barkley's strong support leading the way Minnesota very well may be one of those states.

While I have decided the Wild season opener is more important then my personal attendance this should be the most watched debate of the campaign. The first 15 minutes are critical as it's Saturday night, and we either are about to turn on the Wild, or head out of the house.

Alright it's Wild pregame time. I may be able to give a report on how the debate plays after a few beers, although I don't know how many people will be tuning into the debate from that perspective.

Well it would appear that way anyways as he has pledged against negitive ads the rest of the way. The best news out of that as it would suggest he will not go negitive on Barkley, and it puts Al Franken in an odd position if he were to need to go negitive on Barkley.

I strongly support Dean Barkley for US Senate, he is far and away the best candidate on the ballot. I am however not connected to the campaign and am not completly sure he is doing everything he can to put himself in position to win.

First the positive he is fundraising, fundraising, fundraising. He is taking the debates as seriusly as possible and knows what it takes to score points.

Heres the problem, although honesty counts, Unless your 110% honest 120% of the time, the bailout is not the issue you go against the masses on. Dean's rational and anger on the bailout is solid, but he is absulutly losing votes by saying he would have voted for it. I personally am tempted not to publish that last sentance as it might cost him one or two more votes.

The second area where Dean Barkley is falling short is his incestence to comment on all poll results including the one that came out today. A few weeks ago a poll came out showing Dean at 3%, it was flawed, we all knew it was flawed, and we all knew why it was flawed. Survey USA and the Star Tribune poll have proven track records of giving a good indication of where we are at, and what direction we are moving. If some other poll showed Barkley at 26% that would be worth having fun with, but outside of the poll on election day it is pointless to focus on the polls that only come out once or twice when other polls come out with new results every few weeks.

An article was published on an issue tht only included the views of Norm Coleman and Al Franken. No mention was made of an attempt to get Barkley's view, nor was a closing sentance included stating Dean Barkley is also in the race as a recent article on the third CD race did with David Dillon.

What can be said? It isn't fair that's for sure, but you can't leagally require they do what we want, afterall there are more candidates then just Franken Coleman and Barkley. What we can do is relize Barkley is running strong, he has shined in his first debate, more yard signs are popping up each day. He will raise money, he will run ads, the voters will know he is running and running strong. The major polls in this state all say the same thing. He is gaining support and is above the Jesse Ventura level. Everywhere you turn you find another unexpected supporter. At least one Republican endorsed candidate will be voting Dean Barkley for US Senate.

If the Star Tribune doesn't care thats fine, they are not the player they were just 10 years ago, but we are.

Norm Coleman was only prepared to debate Al Franken tonight, and is acting like a five year old with almost every other response. Franken is giving the typical liberal responses, and outside of appearing inexperianced in the setting is holding his own. Dean Barkley on the other hand understands his opponents, understands the format, understands the public, and even understands the specific rule details of this paticular debate. He's put that all together and is running circles around his opponents.

If your going to show up a debate, you might as well bring everything you've got. Dean did that tonight and will again four more times. If his opponents step it up in the final four debates the best they can hope for is to be on equal footing of Dean Barkley.

Oh what excitement, a radio only debate tonight on WCCO Radio among other stations. It would actually be best for Dean Barkley not to show his complete hand until he gets on TV. Tonight is a chance to introduce himself to those that don't know his politics (latest polls show a third of respondents have not heard of him yet). In any event people will watch his performance and evaluate him tonight. And hey his opponents haven't learned anything yet about how to deal with him so maybe they won't tonight.

We all know Dean Barkley will help Independence Party candidates like David Dillon up and down the ballot, and third party candidates in general, but a critical question should be asked. In the race for president does Dean Barkleys likely strong showing help either Barack Obama or John McCain at a meaningful level?

At this point it's tough to say, both have strong independent qualities, and strong partisan records. I think Barkley's strongest driving point among those that aren't simply using him as a protest vote, is fiscal conservatism, and clearly McCain is closer to that position then Obama.

The latest poll shows Obama up 18%, but if the gap closes Barkley's voters could sway Minnesota, and this year Minnesota could decide a close election.

How this helps across the board

I spent last evening campaigning with Northeast Minneapolis State House candidate David DeGrio, 3rd running a financially strong campaign, and even candidates of other parties like Libertarian Bob Barr will benefit hugely by Dean Barkleys strong support. In 1998 there really were not any strong candidates for Jesse Ventura to take along for the ride, still 3rd party support was up tremendously that year.

Some polls showed David Dillon in double digits prior to Barkley's emergence. While a lot of there support was bound to come from the same people Barkley will bring new people toward Dillon. If in a the average year the typical moderately active IP candidate finishes between 5-10% we can look at 8-15% this year. The better candidates like Dillon and DeGrio can compete.

In what is otherwise a virtually identical result to that of Survey USA Al Franken and Norm Colemans results have flipped. While a 20% swing in a matter of two or three days seems impossible the bailout vote is a huge deal. This would actually be a better result for Dean Barkley as it is much easier to tear away from the guy that doesn't know how to pay taxes.

This confirms the steady rise Dean Barkley is seeing, but does not give him further momentum as the results of survey USA were not available at the time of polling.

A new Star Tribune poll will be released in the morning. Polling took place mostly after Norm Colemans pro bailout vote which should be good news for Dean Barkley but also should tighten the margain between Coleman and Al Franken. The poll took place prior or mostly prior to the release of survey USA so much more then 21% would be suprising, I'm gonna hege my bets and say Dean will come in at 18% with Coleman leading Franken by 3-5 percent.

A little on the dynamic of polls as they effect a third party candidate gaining support, and how polls can manipulate the decision making process.

First off if you comb the blogs you will see several references to the 3% result Rasmussen showed Barkley at a few weeks ago. While that result is completely valid within the context of that polls methodology it should not be considered even an outlier. They went with the idea that third party candidates generally don't do well and most voters will select one of the two establishment candidates. That potentially can happen but polls are supposed to be a snapshot in time and Dean is very clearly somewhere above 13% and presumably still rising beyond the latest 19% figure.

3rd party candidates are not considered by 90% of the population when polling at under 1% (case in point Bob Barr or Ralf Nader) as they start to register they become open for consideration by more and more of the population. Of course being considered only puts them on equal footing of the other considered candidates. In Barkley's case it is reasonable to believe that if it came down to it more then a third of voters would put him in the US Senate over his rivals, meaning with 100% consideration he will likely win. The poll #'s reported are the biggest factor in this. Of course the presence of lawn signs and activist are also used by many to gauge viability.

The goal of the Barkley campaign at this point should be to win the battle of ideas, as at this point the battle for consideration will take care of itself. we're currently looking at 40-55% consideration if that moves to over 70% and he doesn't lose a considerable # of supporters he wins or at least has a late night November 2nd.

Luckily the Democrats and Republicans think more along the lines of the people at Rasmussen and will do little to knock him down until it's to late. The Democrats and Republicans will continue to use there most favorable internals but the real story comes unfiltered.

Update 3:02 PM dow is down to 10325 over 400 points lost in 3 hours. Not only did the bailout not work it actually hurt the market. The market thrives off the free market and this bill works to shut the free market down.

Latest Survey USA poll puts Dean Barkley within 24% of leader Norm Coleman prior to the first debate. More importantly the separation between Coleman and Franken is huge especially in a three way race at 10%.

It's now safe to leave Coleman and meaningless to stay with Franken meaning Barkley probably just gained 4-8% upon the release of this poll. Al Franken will bring debate viewership up and Dean just has to do what he's supposed to do. Coleman still has to be the favorite, but Dean Barkley just went from a long shot to a fair bet.

To put that in perspective you could build 2,000 Twins stadiums with that money, you could build 14 million $50,000 water fountains, you could buy a million dollar house for every person in Minneapolis and St Paul You could buy a $250,000 house for every family in the five state region.
You could completly fund the Iraq war to date.

It's been reported Norm Coleman has recived 11,000 phone calls against this and 100 for it. It's pure political suicide, no rational explenation has been made as to why it is neccisary. Who's running our country, it sure as hell isn't a real American. The 2nd ammendment was created specifically for today. It is time to take our country back.

In a rare article on the a real issue, Doyle fails (and there is no other word but fails) to as much as mention the name Dean Barkley while giving Al Franken and Norm Coleman paragraphs of coverage. Pat Doyle is not an intern, he knows Dean Barkley must be included in such an article, and made a personal choice to ignore him.

Call Doyle and let him know exactly what you think, and call the Star Tribune and demand Pat Doyle be fired immediately.

The Federal Deficit

David Dillon has the ever increasing federal deficit displayed front and center on his web page, sit there for a minute or two and watch it increase by a million dollars. When your literally throwing away a million dollars every few minutes it becomes really easy to approve 20 million here and 16 million there for projects you know nothing about, but of course that only makes things worse.

But hey who cares we can just print more money right? Sure and with each dollar we print is a US government approved increase to the price of gas, food, steel. It's an incentive for our best workers to leave the country, it's an incentive for our best thinkers to produce their ideas outside of the country.

Law makers are entirely responsible for the situation, but even more so is the media and American people for not doing anything about it. So the question is now that we are fully aware that the ride is nearly over are we as voters going to start acting responsible. Or are we going to let a great nation fade.

I've got news for you it's going to take more then just a bold vote to create the kind of change that we can't do without, but since we do have an election in the not so distant future a message saying we as American's don't care will be very easy to send, and the whole world will hear that message loud and clear.

It amazes me that Barack Obama, and John McCain are trying to out bash each other on what might be the most important issue in a generation. Both of course are completely wrong on it as the short term stock market effect is to important to them.

I understand that candidates usually don't participate in Washington this close to an election but anyone who does not participate on this is not qualified to lead. John McCain was right on this issue Monday morning, and let that whinny Barack Obama's political play reverse him in his tracks. John McCain is exactly the wrong man for the job at this time. Obama is simply wrong.

No more bailouts, no more regulations. If you think Democrats or Republicans are willing to lead you haven't been paying attention. I wish I could vote Ron Paul for president as he is exactly what we need, but the only voice of reason on these issues in the US Senate race is Dean Barkley.

I don't care if you vote Bob Barr or Chuck Baldwin for president but a vote for Obama or McCain is a defaulted vote, and the government won't bail you out and give you your vote back.

This can only build more suport and more momentum. I encourage you all to add comments on blogs and make sure those willing to mention Barkley's name know there is a strong level of excitement behind his campaign, and it's not all just people who are mad that they have mean ads.

Just got an E-mail regarding an event this Saturday Noon to 4 at the campaign office in Plymouth (11255 Highway 55, Suite 50). Based on this blogs traffic and several other factors it appears a strong base of volunteers should start rolling in statewide. For more info call the campaign office at 763-417-9972.

Star Tribune has Barkley at 13% with 9% undecided. Basically identical to the Survey USA poll with the difference being Franken is down a few points and undecideds are up.

Still ahead of where Jesse Ventura was at this point. Also Barkley is still only at 24% among independents so there is a lot of oppurtunity to gain.

Survey USA usually gives the Independence Party it's highest # so I doubt we're talking 18-20%, but given that line and the existance of the survey USA #'s I think it's fair to say it's somewhere between 12-17%, Heres hoping it's upwards of 14. As more people see Barkley as a factor his support will continue to grow.

I suspect Norm Coleman will play his Franken Rage ad at least 3 times during the Viking game. The ad hurts Franken badly, but more importantly does hurt Coleman some.

I like to think of these races as a tenth of a percent at a time, but today could be a 2 or 3% day for Barkley 39-37-17 wouldn't look to bad at this point.

Survey USA finds Dean Barkley at 14% with 5% remaning undecided. This is sure to energize the Barkley campaign and leave both Franken and Coleman a little more concearned then they expected to be.

If Barkley performs well in the first debate he hits 20%, no doubt Coleman and Franken will agree to four or less debates now.

All he has to do is knock his opponents down about one tenth of a percent a day and he wins, and they'll do that to themselves. Dean Barkley wins by capitalizing on one or two nitch issues.

I've done somewhat of a disservice to David Dillon by not mentioning him often here. He is clearly the best congressional candidate the Independence Party has (cross endorsement be damned if it only goes one way). And despite the fact I don't see him firing people up the way Dean Barkley can his poll #'s currently are better then Barkley's. He is the typical IP federal candidate strongly against spending, for paying down the debt, for states rights, and socially inclusive.

Not living in the distict I don't have a good feel if a possibility exists for him to break out and become competitve, but much like Tammy Lee he puts a great face on the Independence Party.

Really everyone is still assuming Dean Barkley will finish somewhere around 6-12%, and in the pundits minds he will be so vastly outspent that any fundraising effort will mean little. The reality is he will have to show the voters something to get out of that 6-12% range, but if he does he can almost jump to 20% overnight. Keep in mind Jesse Ventura polled at 26% in this race with a decent chunk of undecideds that could have only added to that #.

$200,000 for Barkley is as meaningful as about 2 or 3 million for his opponents. To put it in other words if the average person that voted for him in the primary gave him $50 he would be financially competitive.

Then we have the debates, the biggest problem I've seen with post Jesse Independence Party candidates is that they more or less agree with the Democrats on issues A,B, and C while agreeing with the Republican on issues D,E and F or in other words while you couldn't get the same package you could vote for similar stances by voting Democrat or Republican. Barkley gets the fact that he can't win that way, and will separate himself from his opponents on as many issues as possible. He will make a point of going after both his opponents at the same time. He will find niche issues such as helmet laws and the smoking ban where he will flat out say to hell with anyone that disagrees. This will help builda meaningful passionate base.

You let a guy like this in the debates and you're throwing everything you know about politics away. I am completely shocked Norm Coleman is stepping into this trap once again

Dean Barkley won the Independence Party primary with well over 50% of the vote. I preferred Jack Uldrich, but the Independence Party is in good hands with one of it's best campaigners in Dean Barkley. The tell it like it is attitude bites Franken and Coleman hard as he did in tonight's speech at the Independence Party primary night party.

Smokers have their best allie yet in Dean Barkley who might just puff a few cigars inside bars over the course of the campaign. The tax payer has it's best allieyet in Barkley. Call him a nut if you want to, tell him he can't win bottom line you'll be talking about Dean Barkley and so will the media.

He's not Tim Penny, he's not Peter Hutchinson and get this he will not make things easy for Norm Coleman. Gone are the days of the wieny liberalish Independence Party candidates. 8% now he's in the debates, Al Franken want any of this? How about you Norm Coleman. Only one US Senate candidate was endorsed at the Ron Paul rally, his name Dean Barkley.

First of all no matter who you support the best way to defeat Norm Coleman and Al Franken is by voting Tuesday in the Independence party primary and showing everybody were here and were ready for the fight of our life starting Wedsday.

Primary turnout at this point is unpredictable it is the only partisan race other then one or two at the state house level that seems to be competitive. It's a race with at least one well known candidate, long time Independence Party supporters will also know Jack Uldrich very well, and current party activist will know endorsed candidate while others will simply honor his endorsement with their vote Steven Williams. At least two others are running active campaigns and hey Bill Dahn can at least count on that freak Leslie Davis' vote.

The most politically wise long term Independence Party members have all endorsed Jack Uldrich. While Dean Barkley has his big name endorsements including Tim Penny and Jesse Ventura, Uldrich list of endorsements include those who are committed to this party on more then an every once in a while basis. Dean Barkley can be a very good candidate in this race, and with some breaks might even win, but Uldrich is no different in that respect. Jack simply is better prepared to represent us in the US Senate while Dean is simply better then Norm Coleman or Al Franken.

Rally for the Republic

In St Paul they were listening to Democrat Joe Lieberman make it crystal clear that John McCain is anything but a friend to the taxpayer, and effectively end my short lived desire to vote McCain/Palin. In Minneapolis we had a taxpayers dream team including Jesse Ventura, Dean Barkley and of course Ron Paul. It really was inspiring to see that there he is a real movement towards change I can believe in and not the communist Bullshit Barack Obama spouts.

Ventura got the crowd on it's feet in a way I haven't seen since he was first elected. While he was playing to a favorable crowd most in the crowd were not there to see him, and I imagine many did not expect to be inspired by him (the Republican spin machine's effort to paint him as a fiscal liberal for supporting the same light rail that Arnie Carlson, Tim Pawlenty, Norm Coleman, and George Bush all supported works). But by speeches end you had to wonder how Ron Paul could possibly top it.

Ron Pauls speech had an amazingly Ventura like quality. Hitting only the points that matter and hitting them in a hard common sense approach. He must have had around 20 standing ovations, and really left little doubt that the Democrats and Republicans were both tax and spend parties that are no longer in touch with the Conservative movement. Even the war that brings most Republicans together can hardly be considered Conservative.

The thousands in attendance were sent out with a strong message to only support true Conservatives, and work to make sure more and more are elected to smaller office such as my Neighbor Tim Utz who received Ron Paul's endorsement for his race for state house against the DFL establishment in Columbia Heights and the surrounding area.

Dean Barkley also earned a strong endorsement at the rally although I still support Jack Uldrich in next weeks Independence Party Primary. Speaking of Uldrich it appears he will be seen on tonight's Tonight show with Jay Leno.

The rally is seen as the first post Ron Paul presidential campaign step in building a real movement that goes beyond just the Republican party, but also a movement that plays to the fact that the parties do have an open process if the #'s are large enough to overcome the establishment. I imagine we will continue to see similar rallies nationwide over the course of the next few years as the long term commitment clearly remains.

The great thing about running within the established party structure is you don't become damaged goods the 2ND time around, and you give your supporters a clear place to go where they can and will find like minded people in large enough #'s to maintain positive momentum.

The media impression of the Independence Party state fair booths suggested Dean Barkley's booth was much more active then Jack Uldrich. I strolled by both booths 2 or three times each and it appeared fairly even action. I might have to rethink my prediction from earlier in the day and say the primary race will be a little closer.

Overall politics were dead all around the fair, as is typical on the weekend. Hopefully next week I'll get a chance to see Franken, Coleman and potentially a presidential candiate or two next week.

A KSTP Survey poll released Sunday night shows 1 in 9 Minnesotan's have already decided neither Norm Coleman or Al Franken are worthy of their vote. Coleman leads 47-39 over Franken. Al Franken does not know how to pay taxes and thus 39% represents the highest he will poll the rest of the way. At 11% (assuming we can put at least 10% of that to the Independence Party primary winner) hope exists, and when Colemans lead becomes 49-35-13 both Coleman and Franken supporters will feel it is safe to support Dean Barkley, Jack Uldrich, or Stephen Williams, and it simply becomes a matter of knocking Coleman under 35%.

Of course if Rob Fitzgerald wins the DFL primary then the DFL will have hope and thus will get behind their candidate.

Al Franken

Lets just say it, Al Franken will not be the next Senator from the state of Minnesota. The reason, he does not know how to pay his taxes, and is not willing to campaign on the issue that our tax system is to complicated which would suggest he feels that average Americans should be capable of doing things that he can't or won't. Worse yet in Frankens ad defending his major tax mistakes he suggest that he overpaid not in Minnesota, but in the state he lived in, or to put it in other words failed to pay his Minnesota taxes.

Al Franken can't win!!! So what does that mean, to assume Norm Coleman will win is silly as most polls suggest Minnesotans are not happy with Republicans. If the rank and file in the DFL are seeing clearly they will see that they have an opportunity in November only by promoting someone other then Franken in September. Rob Fitzgerald would seem to be the only viable alternative. The only other option is the winner of the Independence Party primary. A primary where three candidates have a very real shot at victory. The media concludes Dean Barkley will walk away with it, but then again the media concludes Al Franken is one of two candidates that can win.

In an era where we hear way to often that it's the most important election of our lifetime might I suggest that the DFL and Independence Party primaries are the most important election of this US Senate race?

I can for possibly the first time ever say that 4 Independence Party candidates are all putting forth meaningful effort to convert voters prior to the state fair. I'd love to say six, but when you cross endorse Democrats you hurt the party. I can give a pass for Tinklenberg because he served under Ventura, but why endorse every DFLer that asks. Being against Michele Bachmann and John Kline is for the most part a good thing, but lets not sacrifice our fiscal conseritism because the Republicans fail us in other areas.

I am in favor of cross endorsement as a means of supporting candidates not opposing them.

Now a few favors to take care of, David Dillon faces off with his CD 3 rivals in a debate that deserves fair media coverage, we can no longer tolerate the lazy media (most notably Pat Kessler). Also Jack Uldrich is out with a new web ad, he also is participating in the farmfest debate by answering the questions all the questions asked. Robert Fitzgerald is proudly lining himself up with Ron Paul on his new web ad on facebook. It is clear that neither Al Franken or Norm Coleman will match the fiscal conservatism of Ron Paul. Dean Barkley seems like he will be that kind of option, but as of today the only candidate ready to lead us back in the right direction is Robert Fitzgerald.

Norm Coleman is running on his ability to redistribute millions of dollars to billionaires. Al Franken hasn't seen a dollar he doesn't want to redistribute to individuals. It is not governments job to pick winners and losers.

Build a road or a school hire a cop, fund the military, make sure we are safe but never redistribute wealth. Democrat Republican Independents alike should all vote in the DFL primary to reject Al Franken and Robert Fitzgerad is the most acceptable alternative.

Jesse Ventura has been invited to speak at the Ron Paul Rally for the Republic next month at Target Center. Make no mistake Ventura is more of a fiscal Conservative then any statewide candidate the Republicans have ever offered us. As we stand today the only issue that should matter to Americans is the imbalance in the federal budget. It is the cause of record gas prices, it is the reason seemingly good ideas go nowhere.

As it stands today today we have the option of voting John McCain in an attempt to avoid the misguided path that Barack Obama would lead us down. A vote for John McCain will put us on a smoother path then Barack Obama but without real fiscal conservatism I'd rather feel pain as we head the wrong way so that no American can mistake it.

2006 Independence Party US Senate candidate Robert Fitzgerald is running an active campaign this time looking to knock off Al Franken in the DFL primary. Already Fitzgerald has a clear edge in terms of ability to pay his taxes, but the competition goes beyond just the untested Franken.

While I want to vote in the Independence Primary Fitzgerald with his decision to run DFL might present the best hope. Dean Barkley had to know there was a good chance he would run long prior to Jesse Ventura's decision Monday morning. While the major aspects of the campaign will come later I want to feel a reason to donate money to his campaign.

His website is bare, I have yet to receive a E-mail announcing his campaign, and I know of no events he's committed to attending, nor any that he is mad about not being invited (A Star Tribune article mentions both Coleman and Franken have committed to the Farmfest debate with no mention of any Independence Party even though endorsed candidate Stephen Williams is a farmer).

Barkley polled at 8% a couple months back, and should be slightly above that now, but I and most voters aren't going to support him simply because he is the replacement to Jesse Ventura. Unless I can see a path to victory for Barkley I will probably support Jack Uldrich although between now and the primary I plan on doing what I can to support both.

Of course Stephen Williams has the endorsement which to some primary voters will be all that matters, so he can sort of be considered the bar setter, although it is would not be a shock to see one of the four lesser known candidates take him out of the top three.

Tuesday the media more or less gave the Independence Party ballot slot to Dean Barkley, but with the release of Jack Uldrich's web ad I have to think among those that come September will vote Independence Party it's really close between the two candidates. Barkley has not had a chance to pull ahead fundraising so if Uldrich can build off his first ad he has a great opportunity to pull ahead.

If the election was held today my best guess is Barkley would edge out Uldrich something along the lines of 42% to 35% Stephen Williams finishing 3rd with around 10%.

Ultimately Fundraising is what will elevate Dean Barkley's campaign to a higher level. Barkley already has the best ad man in the business in Bill Hillsman. A couple hundred thousand dollars gets the ball rolling and Dean on our TV's and radio's. From there the Sky's the limit. Anyone in the United States can donate.

The people of Minnesota are ready to do this again, they just need to know it's still possible.

The Star Tribune has a very positive article regarding Barkley's website claim that he's the most effective US Senator in state history.

The fact that Dean has US Senate experience is going to go a long ways in overcoming the usual third party obstacles. While he will be just one of 100 he proved that an independent can be effective. This also gives him the national credibility to bring in a few extra out of state donations, and late if he remains competitive might get him the national media exposure. And debate access is almost a given.

The attack machine is out hard on him for a reason, because he does represent fiscal conservatism in a race where very clearly the Democrats and Republicans do not deliver, and because Al Franken has the potential to free fall if any viable alternative presents itself be it in the primary or general election.

7 candidates are in the Independence Party primary which is bad new in a non instant run off election. That being said having two very credible candiates in Barkley and Uldrich along with the endorsed candidate will provide reason to participate in the Independence Party primary.

Of course Stephen Williams also hasn't filed (I have a sneaking suspicion he might file for another office), so far 2 complete nobodies in Doug Williams and Bill Dahn have filed, along with Kurt Anderson who at least was at the Independence Party convention. We may very well see 6 or 7 candidates on the primary ballot by the end of the day tomorrow.

On the congressional front the Independence Party has candidates filed in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 6th districts. At the state level it's slim pickings with only 2 or 3 that might exceed 10%.

Lets review, about a month ago we heard that either Jesse or Dean Barkley would run, Barkley met with Ventura and the next day indicated he (Barkley) would not run. Since then every Ventura and Barkley media appearance has strongly suggested he will run, including the confirmation that he had not announced last week after the media jumped the gun. Friday he met with what basically will be his campaign team and discussed among other things fundraising and a web launch, oh and ad man Bill Hillsman was involved.

Those that suggest he will not run basically make three points, one he loves his life the way it is, two he won't run because he might not win, and three he's trying to sell books.

The only question I have is what's the title of that book, and how will it sell if he decides it's OK to start the revolution without him?

As the reports on Jesse Ventura continue many pundits and media members continue to pathetically discuss who he might hurt more Norm Coleman or Al Franken. The only intelligent answer is whoever wants the job more, as Jesse has a chance to win and thus decreases both his opponents chances at winning.

When a candidate is polling in the mid 20's and can reasonably assume a sizable bounce by entering the race the question is can he win and what will it take. Every poll I've seen thus far has the same candidate leading Norm Coleman, every election Ventura has participated in has had the same candidate winning. Al Franken is going to lose and always was, he doesn't know how to pay his taxes and in the end that will always matter.

It is clear the pundits bias is overwhelming their judgement, but then again if you either don't know what your talking about, or refuse to talk about what you know you can hardly be considered anything but a two party pundit who is out of their realm when dealing with anything else.

Quick update, I have still received no indication that Jesse will not run. It's been my belief for the last few weeks that Jesse was already organizing a campaign team. I would expect within minutes of his announcement the website will be up and fundraising will begin. While he says he will not spend over $1 million he can't stop money from coming in, he can only return it in the end, I think he can outraise Norm and Al combined from here on out.

I've always had a great sense of how Jesse Ventura thinks. The latet news about todays meeting (of which I have no inside information) clearly indicates he is in. There are no indications that the 24% poll #'s are his max it may remain stable and possibly fade late but the level of support can only go up, and upon announcement he should be right around 30.

People do despise Ventura, any great leader will have that, but that group is more vocal then powerful especially in a three way race. And if you look to the blogs for Ventura analysis you won't get anything worthwhile as all the major bloggers don't understand Ventura's 98 victory or how to read current polls in an intelligent mannor.

The biggest news from today is that Ventura may be willing to allow fundraising to go as high as the people take it, which means he may very well raise a few million allowing him to completly overshadow with his media advantage.

Jesse running away with things

Listening to the radio and reading things on the Internet it is very clear the public is excited to support Jesse Venturas US Senate campaign. Whats more is the Democrats and Republicans think they got him on this 9-11 thing as they pass along lies about what exactly he thinks. Unfortunately for them they don't realize Jesse will get the media access to put the burden on them. So again despite having Jesse lined up in their sights they will in essence completely ignore him. They also foolishly are looking at things in a majority view rather then the reality is the candidate that gets 40% in this race wins going away.

Bloombergs coming to town the 25th to throw some cash (and credible support) his way. Frankens campaign will basically be over a week from today, leaving Jesse to pick away at Coleman as he did in 98.

Jesse is what he always has been a fiscal Conservative (and yes you can occasionally support transportation and still be Conservative) and social liberal. He is what many Minnesotans want, and someone several others are willing to support out of protest.

If Jesse wins by only 5% I will be shocked!

Candidate Filing

So far three candidates have filed for office. Of course that jackass Bill Dahn filed for US Senate, and of course will be blown away by Stephen Williams and Jesse Ventura in the primary. The most active IP campaigner thus far David Dillon has filed for the 3rd congressional seat, and Paul Gaston has filed for state house seat 54B.

The key questions I have are will we see a candidate in the 5th congressional district of course will Jesse run and probbly most importantly if Jesse does file the 15th will he bring anyone with him. Then of course we have the question of how many total candidates and how many quality candidates will we see. Monday is a big day in answering the #'s question as it is the first post holiday filing day meaning a good portion of all filing should take place.

The US Senate race will not be decided by those motivated to vote for Senate, the presidential race in Minnesota will not be decided by those motivated to vote for president. With rare exception those who wouldn't otherwise show up if it wasn't for one race or one candidate will cast a ballot in both races.

In 1998 Jesse Ventura brought out the unexpected voter, while all presidential races bring out the infrequent voter, if Ventura drives that same kind of turnout, and the crossover between unlikely and infrequent voter is not huge we might see an unimaginable voter turnout come November.

Things get even more interesting if John McCain chooses Tim Pawlenty as his running mate. In a large sense Ventura's success will be based on his ability to expose the tactics of Pawlenty and to a lesser extent Roger Moe towards the end of his term. Because of Ventura Pawlenty will have to run on both his record as a legislator and a Governor, and that's will not turn out well for him, as there are very clear inconsistencies that suggest he has no principal.

It's fair to assume Franken will win those that turn out exclusively for Obama, but Ventura should do well among that group, gaining considerable ground on Senator Coleman. I also think Ventura's support crosses over well to Obama, without question should Pawlenty be on the ticket. Stand alone I think Obama wins fairly close, Ventura runs competitive with a chance of Victory, but the combination could mean a solid Obama victory as well as a Ventura wins without to late of a night before the call.

A second three way poll confirms the first putting Ventura within striking distance of Franken, but also showing Coleman will have to be knocked down for the race to become winnable.

One things for certain the anti Ventura spin machine is prepared for his entrance even if they still mockingly suggest he is afraid to enter for fear of losing. Every indication suggest Ventura has committed himself to this race, from his willingness to open up with the Twin Cities media to Dean Barkley's acceptance of a CEO position. As a man of principal though he will not and should not actively campaign until he is officially running come mid July.

Most polls remain stale without a dramatic event, in this race the dramatic event will be Ventura's portion. It is reasonable to assume upon filing his poll #'s will increase into the upper 20's putting him in a dead heat with Franken and 10-12 points behind Coleman, 28-30-39 sounds about right. The can win factor then comes into play and all he has to do is prove he is a change from Coleman and Franken as he did in 98.

A month ago I would have told you he could poll in the high teens, but mid 20's puts him in great position, and the spin machine against him will not back down. he will enter this race and he will finish ahead of Franken, it's just a matter of getting out the vote to defeat Senator Coleman.

I got a sad E-Mail response from to an E-Mail I sent to the draft Dean Barkley website linked off the Independence Party website.

"Ventura is a jerk, keep him away from the party."

I'm sorry but I want public policy from the jerks among us not the nice guy. The Independence Party if its showed any consistency has shown it with honest politics. Unfortunately niceness and honesty means nobody will respect you.

Show me the candidate that can get 51% and I'm on board but I'll take the jerk and hope for 37%. Oh by the way when compared side by side with Franken and Coleman at least Jesse will be the jerk they can respect.

And oh by the way if jerks like this are currently working behind the scenes, the long term fate of the party is very clear as Ventura and even Barkley need the party less then the party needs them.

The initial reaction to Jeese Ventura's increased speculation has been interesting, listening to the radio yesterday I both Joe Souchery and Dan Barriaro (did I spell his name right? Who cares) went out of their way to make it clear they did not respect the Governor. Up until that point I felt the scenario was clear as day, but you know what back in 98 at this point the media showed him no respect for different reasons.

The three biggest things that still line up in Ventura's favor

1. 35% and he's in (in other words if most people you talk to don't like him that does not mean he can't win)

2. Al Franken didn't pay his taxes (If this even increases Ventura's vote total by as little as 1% that's huge)

3. Ventura knows how the game is played (none of this well reality suggest taxes might have to be raised or jeez driving with cell phones is bad press conferences)

I think day one of a Ventura campaign Franken is eliminated from contention, then it becomes Coleman versus Ventura battling for 70-75% of the vote. The weired thing is in this scenario the better Democrats do the the top of the ticket at better Ventura will do.

If and when he does win again very few people will be shocked, surprised? Sure, but only the Joe Soucerey's and Dan Barrairro's of the world will be shocked.

Either former Governor Jesse Ventura or US Senator Dean Barkley will challenge Norm Coleman for US Senate. Best bet is it will be Jesse Ventura, and despite the fact he suggest he will not campaign other then debating his opponent (that right Jesse makes the current DFL front runner so insignificant he or she is not worth mention) I suspect that in the end Jesse will have as active of a campaign as the people want. Granted he won't have multimillion on hand he will be able to cover the basics and then some.

It's tough to predict victory, but at least one of the asinine statements his detractors made up has been proven wrong, Jesse Ventura does have the guts to get back on that line and take all the abuse that comes with it win or lose.

When it comes to my politics nobody does better at promoting my views then Jesse Ventura. Being able to vote for Jesse with my very first vote was a remarkable experience for someone who may very well never get to vote for a winner again without compromising my ideals.

Jesse has reemerged promoting his new book (that's right Jesse was promoting himself and while many will try to knock him for it I call him an American) leading to speculation that he may run for political office again be it president or US Senate.

Lets for moment look at how those races would drastically change if Jesse entered them (ignoring the process that would have to take place to put him in the presidents race).

At the moment we have a very tight race for president regardless of the Democrat nominee (despite the fact that Barack Obama very clearly can not win). If Jesse enters that does not change day one Jesse would only poll around 5-8% as the nation still would consider him a pro wrestler joke candidate. And unlike the Peter Hutchinson Tim Penny Michael Bloobmerg type candidates he would convert support fairly evenly from both sides. Basically the race would follow the 98 Governors race formula, and since were pretending he would get full ballot access we can also pretend he would get full debate access. In other words in a race between Ventura Obama and McCain both he and McCain would gave a 50-50 shot at winning with Obama sitting somewhere under 30% of the vote.

Now for the race he can clearly enter and get full debate access Minnesota's US Senate race giving Norm Coleman a rematch as the Al Franken gimmick fades into the background. Ventura may very well fall a bit short given the lack of meaningful power the office gives an independent as opposed to the great veto power an executive office gives him. Ventura can easily run under the Independence Party banner although really that party is so lost it would be a mistake as it would then be able to label him as just another Franken. As a former governor he clearly is bigger then then the Independence Party and would only need to prove he's ready for the fight with the ballot access fight. I think Coleman has a meaningful edge here but as of right now Colemans only fear is Franken loses the nomination a Ventura candidacy would mean he would have to work to win to win reelection.

Either way I could proudly vote for someone who has a chance to win once again. Run Jesse run, if for no other reason then to push Franken or Obama to the sidelines.

Earlier this week it perfectly clear to me that Barack Obama is either a hateful person, or loyal to a pathetic fault either of which make him unqualified for the office he seeks, and undeserving of the office he holds. But hey he delivered one heck of a speech, while a speech of that kind can be part of leadership I have yet to see Barack act on any the things he says. People on the street have done more for many of the causes Barack speaks to in otheUS Senator Barack Obama. Leading requires action and all I know about Barack Obama is a great speaker, or in other words would make a great salesman even if he's not offering a quality product.

Why the heck is everyone ignoring his complete lack of a meaningful record? Why is every

problem solved because he gave a nice speech. In the aftermath of 9-11 George Bush delivered a great speech about what he was gonna do about it, and regardless of the debate on the effort to get those responsible, we can all agree the speech itself accomplished nothing. Barack Obama is by far the least qualified candidate who has made it this far in my lifetime. Talk is cheap but apparently the standard for most Americans votes is so low nobody cares.

Just saw on the news Barb Davis White held her announcement press conference for her congressional run against Keith Ellison in the 5th. As I said last week I had a chance to hear her speak to my local Republican convention back when I thought I might be able to be a Republican. She is a shamefully embarrassing candidate for anyone that believes in gay rights. Republicans will flock to her and she may very well do better then any Republican in many years, but she will also drive many that oppose Keith Ellison in many ways to select the lesser of two evils and vote for Keith Ellison, and thus Keith Ellison's hold on the seat will only become stronger. Of course if the 5th had instant run off voting she could be helpful in removing Ellison from office as she would bring out anti Ellison voters to the polls and it would simply be a matter of a Tammy Lee like candidate finishing 2nd with upwards of 25% of the vote. The freedom IRV gives voters to support a third party candidate would callow that to come a little easier then it seems.

We also have word today that Mike Cirisi is out of the race for Norm Cole mans senate run meaning Al Franken will be allowed to embarrass the Democrat party with no original ideas and no political skill. I'm glad I don't have major disagreements with Norm Colemans politics because he's going to be around for a while.

On the presidential side I ignored Michael Bloombergs announcement that he will not run as I was trying to be a Republican, he made the right choice not because the Democrats and Republicans have delivered overly acceptable candidates but because his run was hopeless. He just didn't have that indescribable "it" that Jesse Ventura and to a lesser extent Ross Perot had, and money was not going to change that. Of course Ron Paul formally withdrew from the race as he could not turn his support into delegates. It's a shame he had to be so vocal about his war stance as his message on other matters sells well.

Then we have the fun and games with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are playing. Hillary's political skill is fun to watch, while Barack seems to be in a little to deep, but may have been able to ride the wave long enough to win the nomination where he stands no chance against John McCain (mark my words he will not get 40% of the vote). There is also the interesting question of how the party handles Michigan and Florida, we need to remember here that the parties are not a part of the democratic process, and claims of disenfranchisement have no grounds (just look at the delegate counts certain states have and you will see the parties get to set the rules as they see fit). If people don't like how the parties operate they're only legal ground is to vote outside of that party come November.

Finally we have the matter of the six republicans who voted for the transportation tax. As I posted at the time I do not support the vote, and fully approve of how the Republicans have reacted in stripping them of committee chairs and this weekend not endorsing others, however I can respect them for voting as they saw fit. It seems as if the leaders in the Independence with there current fiscally moderate to fiscally liberal (which needs to change if the party ever wants to win without the luxury of being able to run an incumbent) approach are ready to support them if they do decide to continue on without the Republican endorsement.

I'm a not nearly as proud as I would like Independence today, and hope in the upcoming years the party can become what it once was which is anything but fiscally liberal. I also am actively looking for any candidate or party that will proudly promote both gay marriage and fiscal conservatism. I'll be more involved in the Independence Party in the coming months and hopefully will be able to provide some meaningful news. I am aware of a few candidates that sound adaquat, although clearly nothing of the Tammy Lee or Tim Penny level at this point.
